Energy Efficient Home Builders
Energy Efficient Home Builders
This home was built with a goal of becoming the most energy efficient home in the Wiregrass area. Many measures were taken and techniques were employed to accomplish this goal. Recently, a representative from Wiregrass Electric performed an energy audit on this home and I am elated to announce that we succeeded! This super energy efficient home yielded the best numbers ever recorded for a Wiregrass Electric energy audit. With an ANNUAL AIR CHANGE RATE OF .14 per hour, this home has seemingly no air leakage. It was estimated that the yearly cost of air leakage from heating and cooling will only amount to about $7.00 per year. As a result, the electric bills are fantastic. Subtracting the pool, the electric bill is averaging between $50 to $100 for a 3800 square foot home. Adding the pool, it averages around $150 to $175 a month. With three air conditioners, twenty foot ceilings, and a pool, this home has become the Wiregrass benchmark of energy efficiency.
Because of our efforts with this wonderful home, we were honored to have it featured in the Alabama Living Magazine.

May 29 at 4:51pm · Love Hill · Day 90: Got most of the cabinets brought into the house. They’ll be installed the next couple of days. I have to be honest in saying that although I was excited about getting our new house, I was NOT excited about the actual building process. Josh and I are both stubborn and hard-headed and I was not up for the battle with him that I knew would last month after month. Typically, when someone finds out you’re building a house they’ll say “I’ll never do that again!” and begin to tell you horror stories about their build. I’ve seen more negative aspects of building than positive because of the stress level that remains a constant high until it’s over. We’ve never built before so I can’t compare it to anything else but what I can tell you is there’s been none of that. At all. No kidding. I had a difficult time picking out the front door that I wanted and because of that, it arrived late. That wasn’t too big of a deal. I was more stressed about it than I shouldve been. They worked around it until it came in and now it’s there. From picking out flooring, paint, plumbing, shingle colors, windows, trim colors, brick, stone, appliances and everything else we’ve made decisions on I can honestly tell you that it has been easier than I ever imagined. It’s not EASY, but easier than I imagined. True, there are a lot more decisions to make than I thought there were. There are a few things that I would have changed but they’re things I didn’t think of until after the fact and at this point it’s too late to change. If you ever decide to build a house, do yourself (and your builder) a favor:
*Start a binder (you know me!!) and keep notes of everything you talk about with your builder so you’ll know what’s next, what’s been done and what you need to do on your end. Im happy to share mine if anyone is interested. 🙂
*Pick out everything you can as soon as you can. You’ll have time to change your mind before the deadline but at least you’ll have an idea of what you want instead of scrambling at the last minute AND so you don’t have to make a million changes after things are built/laid out/painted.
*Pinterest the mess out of stuff. Print out pictures of everything you see you want. I have several photos on one page labeled “Kitchen” and “Living Room” (etc), printed out and put in my binder.
*Make a “must haves” list and a “would like to have” list. Give it alllllll to your builder to price out and make changes accordingly. That’s just a few tips up to the point where we are. I’m sure by the time this is all over, I’ll have some more! If you want to make it REALLY easy on yourself, go with Scott Childers of Southern Home Builders, LLC. Every single step we’ve taken in this process has been laid out before us so we know exactly whats coming and what we need to be doing to get ready for the next step. I don’t always trust my decisions. I don’t like for people to sugar-coat things and pacify me because they don’t want to hurt my feelings. Im thankful he’s not a sugar-coater. He’s honest with his opinions. Excited to see what the next 90 will bring!!!!
Cabinets, trim and doors this week.
Painting next week. Followed by lighting, flooring and plumbing fixtures!
Unless the Lord builds the house,
the builders labor in vain.
